Sound clips of locomotive Holwell No3, which at that time in 1969, was the oldest steam loco still working for a living (as against preserved).
All the recordings were on the same day and were all around the Cromford road bridge (Wirksworth) .
1-Loco working hard, cuts off then opens up again.
2-Steady chuff-chuff into distance.
3-Faster chuff, waggon squeal, passes mic into distance.
4-Loco working hard up bank, squealing, loco looses traction-wheel slip
5-Loco passes mic, waggons over rail joints.
6-Buffer knocking and squealing, loco working into distance
7-Low hum of conveyer plant, loco speeds up, squeal of waggons, loco passes mic speeding up.

Comments from Peter Skinner.

(1.) These photographs were taken in the quarry end of the line at Easter 69, this it is believed was the last year that steam loco Holwell no 3 worked at the quarry before being replaced by diesel Uppingham. The other steam loco was in the shed.

The loco had spread the track and slides 409 to 413 were various attempts to rerail it . The old chap supervising was I believe the forman ganger, perhaps someone will put names to faces!

The other slides are of the loco at work loading wagons at the tippler delivering stone to the station and returning with empties on the same day.

Duffield station was in 1973

(2.) " Holwell No3" working in the Middlepeak exchange sidings. The home-made cab extension shows up well, and one is particularly interesting as the rear wheels are being re-railed, courtesy of a JCB!

(3.)   Comments below kindly supplied by George Cash (Reading)

Comment no. 1 has possibly suffered in the punctuation. Uppingham was of course the other steam loco (Peckett no 1257 of 1912) and worked turn-about with Holwell No 3. The diesels were unnamed.

I understand the steam locos worked all quarry traffic until March 1970 when the first Baguley diesel "Ind Coope No 1" arrived. The steamers then went into reserve but for a while one (usually Uppingham) was used regularly (usually Mondays I think) to work traffic from the Stonycroft end of Middlepeak quarry as clearances were very tight particularly in the tunnel under Middleton Road and the curve in the cutting approaching it. (the walls here are barely further apart than the length of the sleepers which must have made track maintenance awkward). I seem to remeber someone telling me that the Baguley was not allowed up there. In April of that year the small Hibberd diesel "Derbyshire Stone No 2" (1891/1934) arrived and that was used for the Stonycroft traffic. From then on the steamers were only used to cover for diesel repairs, notably around Easter 1972 when Uppingham was out, running without its chimney-cap which had rusted away.

Baguley no 1 is now at the Devon Railway Centre. Baguley no 2 (which left Ind Coope in March 1970 for Cawdor Quarry, Matlock and later transferred to Wirksworth - does anyone know when?) appeared to be out of use by December 1980 and was later scrapped. The Hibberd was on display in Bridgnorth until recently (bearing a spurious WD number - it never was a military engine) but I have heard it has moved, but I don't know where.

The Rolls-Royce Steelman which was the last loco to be used here was no. 10274 of 1968 from Corby Steelworks and arrived in 1980. Does anyone know where and when it went?

Photos 414-5 show in the background the narrow-gauge loco shed which used to house 2 Ruston diesels which worked the 3 ft gauge line from the foot of the incline from Middlepeak across the SG lines to the tipping dock opposite the site for our new Ravenstor station. This NG line went out of use in the late 50s but the shed was not demolished until dec 1980. I know of 2 locos used here (RH 200494/1940 & 218037/1943) but does anyone know of any others?

Photo 434 shows the line to Stonycroft - further round the bend the line runs into a stone-walled cutting with very restricted clearances (as mentioned above) before burrowing under Middleton Road into the quarry.

(4.) Information update (25th Aug 2003)
The owner of Baguley no 1 is Matthew Gicquel (Devon Railway Centre) who has been in touch. He confirms that no.2 has been scrapped and he is owner of spares recovered from this loco.
(5.) Sound tracks originally made by Peter Skinner on a reel-to-reel tape recorder Easter 1969. He has now transfered these to MP3 computer files and made them available to EVRA. They are at the top of this page. (PJR Dec 2003)
