Thursday 18th March - Richards day out with his photos and comments
At Wirksworth the permanent way team gathered - both of them ! We had just enough staff to take the works train south, with kind assistance from the flail driver at the level crossing. On arrival at Shottle we found two young ladies and one young chap awaiting us, so some welcome reinforcements. With this mixed gang, we set off towards Hazelwood and dropped more new(ish) sleepers in the right places to replace the 'rotters'.

Then it was to the erosion site where we laboured to drop assorted surplus concrete artefacts to strengthen the river bank. A tough task for a small but youthful (with one exception) team
Heading north, we can see the results of the VCT's work at Postern Lodge to improve the farm crossing and sight lines.
At Shottle North, the new interlocking is in use for the ground frame, with the Wirksworth - Duffield staff now needed to access the loop or siding
Back at base, there was time to admire the new arrival, the Inspection Saloon, on display at Platform 1. It is here for 5 years, courtesy of the Great Central Railway. It is in pretty good condition and as well as being here to be worked on, it is available for hire for small parties
